Character Name: Gold
Character Canon: Gold - Pokemon Adventures (manga) - Canon
Character Age/Gender: 16/Male
Canon Point: The beginning Vol 41 Chapter 442
Character Canon History: Gold on Bulbapedia!
Character Personality:
To put it mildly, Gold could be considered by some to be a juvenile delinquent. By age 10 he was already adept at cheating at pool, flirting with girls, and calling a highly respected professor an 'Old Geezer' more often than his actual name. Add to all of this the fact he's got quite a healthy ego and tends to take on more than he can handle and you have a rowdy spitfire of a young man who is seemingly always in some sort of trouble. On some level, however, Gold seems to relish that crazy sort of existence and one gets the feeling he'd be bored with anything less. Every emotion and idea is expressed with intensity, although his absolute favorite mood seems to be 'cartoonishly cocky' (he has been known to exaggerate his strengths) and it's the one he's most usually seen sporting. He tends to spring back from other moods to this one very quickly - he's not one to mope or dwell on bad luck. In that, he can surely be called an optimist because he always seems confident he'll conquer whatever challenge he's up against on his next try. While sometimes his actions can lead one to believe he's being reckless, more than once he's actually proven to be thinking ahead to solve the problem in unique way others haven't considered.
Gold is also incredibly blunt with his opinions, even if they're not the most tactful ones to express (telling Crystal she shouldn't enjoy a candy bar too much because she'll 'get fat' for example). No matter how many times his lack of a brain-to-mouth filter gets him into trouble he never seems to learn when to keep his ruder observations to himself.
In spite of some of his more unsophisticated qualities Gold possesses a very kind heart. Having been raised with a gaggle of Pokemon all around him, he considers the creatures many others in his world see as pets or friends to be equal to family members. His close camaraderie with them means he is able to raise young Pokemon to a much higher potential than your average trainer, earning him the title of 'Hatcher'. It was by observing Gold's strong bond and love for his Pokemon that made Oak decide to give him a Pokedex despite his brash, immature nature. When it comes to his fellow humans, his affection can sometimes show itself in unique ways (like often referring to one of his best friends as a 'jerk') but is no less intense in its loyalty when the chips are down. There's been more than one occasion where he's put himself right in the thick of a dangerous situation to save friends (both human and otherwise) without so much as a second thought.
An interesting facet of Gold's personality is that, in spite of being a very skilled Pokemon trainer, he knows little to nothing about many of the more famous faces in the field. Upon meeting Professor Oak he simply knows him as 'the old guy' who shares a radio show with DJ Mary, a radio personality he has a huge crush on. His knowledge about gym leaders, even those living in his own region, is similarly poor to non-existent. Even once he does get to know them, he tends to treat them like equals rather than celebrities. They are just as likely to be on the receiving end of one of his smart alecky comments as your average Joe (although exceptions are sometimes made for cute girls, of course).

The Talk on Bakerstreet
(Third person:)
He tried to tell himself that a challenge was a challenge. He'd had some pretty dangerous adventures in the past and faced down some formidable foes - some had brought him mighty close to meeting his end, even. There had been the occasional injuries both to his physical self and sometimes to his pride, but he'd never considered settling for an easier life for even a fraction of a second. Some people had nightmares about facing down death. Gold had nightmares about becoming a lazy couch potato whose idea of a good time was watching some cheesy soap opera while his butt slowly became one with the sofa cushions. In short, a life of constant activity and lofty goals to boldly reach for was his ideal. Short breaks were okay, but he'd felt lucky that new adventures seemingly found him before he could get too complacent with more mundane things.
Yet, here he was, being asked to accomplish a goal that was decidedly less treacherous than capturing a Pokemon ten times his size or taking on an entire gang of thugs.
Cuddling. It wasn't a bad word. While he considered himself quite a manly man, he wasn't about to pretend that he didn't have a smidgen of a maternal side lurking within. They called him the 'Hatcher' for good reason, after all. You couldn't raise a Pokemon to its full potential just by barking orders at it and training it to exhaustion -- there needed to be love in there too. They needed to know that their trainer cared for their well-being above all else, and sometimes even the most intimidating looking Pokemon needed a little hug or a scratch under the chin to ease their worries. Heck, there had been a few nights when it was just him and his team camping out under the stars and they'd all cuddled together in a big pile to share their warmth. He certainly had cuddling experience, and there was plenty of appeal in the possibility of finding some cute girl who'd totally be won over by his impressive skills in the field.
No, what was bothering him was that he knew he was needed elsewhere. There'd been that request from old man Oak before he'd ended up in this weird place... what would happen with that? Would he be stuck here hugging around while everything went to crap back home? It ate away quietly at the back of his mind, even as he kept on his confident face in public. No need for anyone else to know he was having doubts. He had a rep to build here, after all.
